In 2016 the idea for Roller Derby arose in Innsbruck due to a public call for art projects, which had been won by the Fearless Bruisers Innsbruck. This grant laid the groundwork for bringing this thus far unknown sport to Tyrolean soil.
Founding a Roller Derby team in Innsbruck was primarily intended as we wanted to work in a queer-feminist collective - without using our brains all the time ;) We wanted to introduce a sport, which is incredibly fun. Besides, without being well grounded in it, Roller Derby enables marginalised people to participate in team activities and to do sports. Anyone can take part as long as they are 18+ and identify as woman or gender expansive; everything else can be trained. This concept alone was reason enough for us to identify with Roller Derby and thus, we brought the Fearless Bruisers into being.
We are members of Woman's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) since 2024.
Our club is driven by the DIY (Do it yourself) spirit, which is why all members are also involved in one of our 12 working groups from finance team to merchandise team or training team.
The Fearless Bruisers consist of an A and B team with a total of around 30 players and, like almost all roller derby teams, are a women's or FLINTA* team. The team does not have a coach, the players train themselves. The jersey and club colors are light blue and magenta. As is usual in roller derby, the players do not compete under their real names, but under nicknames such as Kickass Karolina, Eve Massive or Sandy Crush. The Bruisers are supported by a cheerleading group called Tierleader, and the games are moderated live in the hall. The club anthem is the song “Bad Reputation” by Joan Jett.
Imagine a place where everyone, regardless of experience, can join in, learn, and be part of it.
